Chicken, Shrimp, & Steak Fondue

This fondue is so much fun to make, that I request it for my birthday dinner most of the time.  Each person gets to cook his or her own meat, chicken, or seafood, and then there are sauces to dip the cooked meat, chicken, or seafood in.   You definitely need an adult to help you with this because the oil has to get very hot in order to cook your food.  We like to use an electric fondue pot for this because it heats the oil.  If you don't have an electric fondue pot, then you will have to heat the oil on the stove before pouring it into your fondue pot.  You can find fondue pots that aren't very expensive, and if your family is thinking of buying just one for all kinds of fondue, my Grandma thinks that an electric fondue pot is the best choice because all kinds of fondue can be cooked in it.

My Grandma has three of these pots because they are her favorite ones for fondue.  They are electric, so they heat the oil and you don't have to heat it on the stove first.  This one works for cheese and chocolate fondue too.  An adult in your home can order one just like this by clicking on the fondue pot.

4 cups vegetable oil or peanut oil (more or less depending on your fondue pot; you will need to pour oil into the pot to the fill line inside)

2 boneless skinless chicken breasts

1-2 pounds medium to large raw shrimp (this is our favorite, so we use 2 pounds)

1 pound top sirloin steak, about 1 inch thick

Dipping sauces such as cocktail sauce for the shrimp, barbecue sauce, and salsa

How to Make Chicken, Shrimp, and Steak Fondue

First you need to prepare the ingredients.  The steak must be cut into thin strips.  I think the best knife to use is a boning knife.  Here in the picture I am slicing the meat "across the grain." If you look at a piece of meat, the fibers in the meat are all facing one way; it looks kind of like you could take a piece and pull out some strings of meat.  You don't want to cut along the strings or fibers, you want to cut the other way.  That means the meat will be much more tender when cooked.  It is much easier to cut the meat very thin if you put the meat in the freezer for about 30 minutes before you cut it. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts sometimes have a little bit of fat on them.  This needs to be trimmed off as well as any veins or other stuff that doesn't look appetizing.  After the chicken is trimmed, cut it in 1 inch squares. To prepare the shrimp, put them in a colander and rinse them under cold running water.  Let all the water drain off before you put them on the serving platter.

This is what our platter looked like.  If you want to get fancy, you can cover the plate with leafy lettuce, then put the chicken, shrimp, and steak on the lettuce.  It looks prettier that way. Now it's time to heat the oil in the fondue pot.  I like the electric pot because we can heat the oil right in the fondue pot.  If you have a different kind of fondue pot, you will need to heat the oil on the stove, then carefully pour it into the pot.  It is very important that the oil is kept very hot so that your food will cook fast. Spear pieces of chicken, shrimp, or steak on your fondue forks.  Put them in the hot oil to cook, then slide the cooked food onto your plate.  Remember, you don't eat the food off of the fondue forks, you eat it off your plate with a regular fork.  You will want to dip your cooked food into one of the sauces. You can use any sauces that you like:  tartar sauce, barbecue sauce, salsa, steak sauce, cocktail sauce, etc.
